State issues advice on theft and burglaries during World Cup

Local residents and travellers are being urged to be more security conscious following an increase in insurance claims for theft and burglaries since the beginning of the World Cup.

While tens of thousands of people flock to stadiums and fan-zones it appears thieves are taking the opportunity to help themselves in the suburbs.

Mary-Jane Daly of State Insurance told ONE News even if homeowners are only leaving home for a few hours they should take extra care.

"Take the precautions that you'd normally take if you go on holiday, and let your neighbours know what you're doing," advised Daly.

The insurance provider saw a 67% increase in claims for theft and burglaries during the World Cup's opening weekend.
