State Holiday Tips

In, on or around the water

  • If you're heading to the beach, find a beach near you that's patrolled by a lifeguard.
  • Check the weather conditions and tides before boating or kayaking and wear a life jacket. Always allow for the fact that you have to get back!
  • Be aware of boating regulations and take care with towing speeds.
  • If you're swimming with young children at the beach, look for the red and yellow flags, a small distance apart.
  • You can find more beach safety tips on our partner Surf Life Saving NZ's website.

 On the road

  • Reduce the risk of motor vehicle crime - be aware of what's visible and stored in your car when you leave it unattended.
  • Avoid leaving any papers in the car with your name and address on them. A thief stealing your vehicle, or property from it, could decide to visit your home.
  • Check the tyre pressures and make sure your registration, WoF and car insurance policy are current.
  • Get roadside assistance with our Roadside Rescue cover for just $30 a year*. We'll help you out 24/7 no matter who's driving.

*State Roadside Rescue covers two callouts a year. See our full Roadside Rescue terms and conditions or call 0800 80 24 27 for more information.

 At home

  • Record the serial numbers of all your electronic items at SNAP - it's a FREE handy online tool created by the Police. It means if your house is burgled, you can track your stolen property and it can help with your insurance claim too.
  • Before going on holiday, make sure your home and contents insurance is up-to-date, and you stop paper deliveries and ask a neighbour to collect your mail.
  • Always remember to lock all doors when you go away. Fit window locks on your windows and hide the keys in a secure place.
  • Remember there's a good chance the value of your contents will exceed your cover, especially after Christmas. You can check the amount you should be covered for, with our online contents calculator. Check your contents insurance covers you for the right amount, or call us on 0800 80 24 27 if you have any questions.

 Overseas

  • Make copies of your travel insurance policy number, passport and emergency numbers. Take one with you and leave one with family or friends.
  • Take a mixture of money with you and don’t keep all your money in one place.
  • Stick with the tour services recommended by your travel agent.
  • If you haven't been to the dentist in a while, get a check-up before you head away to avoid toothache while you're travelling.
  • If taking toddlers on holiday, check their ears with a GP the day before your flight.
  • You can make a claim by filling out our claim form, calling us toll free (within NZ) 0800 155 777 or collect from overseas +64 9 969 5550.
  • You can get more safe travel tips and advice from our Travel insurance page.
