The protection of your privacy is important to us, and we are committed to acting in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020.

Who we are

State is a business division of IAG New Zealand Limited (IAG NZ), 1 Fanshawe Street, Auckland 1010. IAG NZ is part of Insurance Australia Group, an ASX listed company with general insurance businesses in Australia and New Zealand.

Purpose for collecting your information

State collects, holds, uses and shares your personal information for insurance-related, marketing, and employment purposes, along with other services that our group of companies may provide.

Where applicable, we also collect, hold, use and share your personal information so that we can comply with legislation, regulation, and industry codes that apply to us.

As part of our commitment to providing the best possible service to our customers, State may record calls.

Who we may give your information to or obtain it from

State is the intended recipient of your information. We may also give your information to, and obtain it from, others, including:

  • other business divisions and related entities of IAG NZ and Insurance Australia Group (although we’re not obliged to)
  • our agents and distributors, such as insurance brokers or commercial partners, who offer our products or services on our behalf
  • other policy holders or representatives that you consented to act on your behalf
  • other parties involved in a claim, such as passengers, third parties or witnesses
  • third-party service providers that assist us with claims management, claims investigation, loss assessments or recoveries
  • our suppliers or repairers
  • other third-party service providers, such as mailing houses, payment service providers, software providers, market researchers or lawyers
  • your financiers or credit providers with a financial interest in your insured property
  • government and law enforcement agencies
  • external dispute resolution schemes
  • other insurance companies and reinsurers
  • the insurance industry, including the Insurance Claims Register, an external database where insurers can access claims information.

Information from you or about you may be stored physically or electronically, including in offshore facilities, by:

  • IAG NZ
  • any other IAG NZ company
  • any Insurance Australia Group company
  • any supplier (with whom we have a contractual arrangement).

Where your information is stored physically or electronically outside New Zealand, we ensure that our contractual arrangements with these suppliers and entities generally include an obligation for them to comply with New Zealand privacy laws or privacy laws with comparable safeguards. We will take reasonable and appropriate steps to protect this information from unauthorised access or disclosure.

New Zealand Motor Vehicle Register

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) operates the New Zealand Motor Vehicle Register, which records and holds information about vehicles registered in New Zealand and the persons these vehicles are registered to (MVR Information).

Under section 241 of the Land Transport Act 1998 (LTA) and Gazette Notice 2022-au4072 of 28 September 2022 , IAG may access the MVR Information for the purpose of assessing or processing an insurance policy or claim in relation to a vehicle.

You can instruct NZTA that you do not wish your name and address made available through the Motor Vehicle Register under section 241 of the LTA (opt-out). However, IAG also has authorised access under section 237 of the LTA to the opt-out information for the purposes specified. IAG agents with access to MVR Information may also access it for IAG purposes.

Information you give us must be accurate and complete

You must provide accurate and complete information. If you don’t do this, we might:

  • decline your application
  • reduce or decline your claims
  • be unable to provide other services you have requested.

If anything changes, you must also tell us.

Authorisation to collect, hold, use and share your and others’ information

You agree that State is authorised to collect, hold, use and share your personal information in accordance with this privacy policy.

Where you provide State with personal information about any other person, you confirm that you have their authority to both:

  • disclose their personal information
  • authorise State to collect, hold, use and share the information in accordance with this privacy policy.
