Travel tips for holiday makers

LIFESTYLE | November 2019

Heading across the ditch. Off to the islands. Dreaming of white sand beaches. Two days out, someone gets sick. So long summer holiday.

It happens more often than you think. That’s why it pays to plan ahead. Organising State Travel Insurance when you book your trip is a smart move. It can save you a whole bunch of holiday stress and cash. Plus, as a customer you can also get 10% off with State1. Win win.

Here are some quick tips for planning a chilled-out holiday – whatever happens:

Cover your trip

One in 20 holidays are cancelled or derailed before they begin. Here are some common reasons:

  • Accidents at home
  • Sudden illnesses or emergency surgery
  • Kids getting sick
  • Event or concert cancellations
  • Storms, floods, fog, etc.

You can’t predict a slip in the shower or a flood in Queensland, but you can plan for them. Get travel insurance with cancellation cover before you go, it’ll come in handy for any prepaid tickets, activities and tours. Check out our State Travel policy for full terms and conditions.

Cover your things (and your driving)

Lost luggage. Tricky thieves. Panic packing. There are plenty of ways for your things to go missing while overseas. Driving unfamiliar roads can easily lead to expensive fender benders in rental vehicles. Cameras and smartphones often end their days soaking wet at the bottom of an ocean. Makes sure you have enough cover for your things, items that are extra valuable can be covered under additional luggage cover. And if you do find yourself in a bind with lost or stolen luggage, get a written Police report from local authorities within 24 hours as it’ll help make things a lot easier when you make a claim. See our State Travel policy wording for more info.

Did you know: If you have an accident in your rental car, we can cover the rental car repair cost under your State Travel Insurance. 2

Cover your health

Swimmers ear, Bali belly, moped misadventures. Getting ill or injured while on holiday is bad enough. Paying for medical treatment, cancelled tickets, extra accommodation and special flights - that’s the real kicker! But if you have the right travel insurance you can relax.

True story: How a night out in Ho Chi Minh turned into a $320K claim

A State customer was on a night out in Ho Chi Minh when he slipped and fell over a parked motorcycle. The result? Fractured ribs, a collapsed lung and a pulmonary embolism. He was rushed to a hospital where they did x-rays, investigations and emergency treatment.

The doctors quickly realised the situation was dire. They needed more help. They urgently evacuated him by air ambulance to another medical facility, using our 24-hour emergency assistance team. Once there, they further stabilised his injuries and eventually evacuated him back to New Zealand.

His travel insurance covered:

  • Overseas medical expenses
  • Air ambulance transfer from Vietnam to Thailand
  • Air ambulance medical evacuation to New Zealand
  • Continued medical costs in New Zealand.

Total Claim: $320,000
