How to streamline your routines

LIVING | 29 May 2019

Chances are you already follow some sort of routine everyday – and we don’t just mean ‘eat sleep work repeat’. Maybe there’s a specific routine you like to do while getting the kids ready for bed or a loose routine you follow first thing in the morning. Routines may get a bad rep but we think they’re essential for busy lives like yours.

Prepare as much as you can the night before

This solves two things – the worry you feel at night thinking you must have forgotten something on your to-do list and it saves you from feeling rushed in the morning. Get your to-do list for the next day sorted, prepare the lunches, make sure the kids school bags are ready to go – do all these little things that add to the morning rush before you go to bed. Besides, who wants to start their day already stressed out and running late?

Serve meals in containers with a lid

You know those glass containers you use for baking or microwaving that comes with a lid? Serve your meals in them – not only will it cut time in packing away leftovers, it also makes for easy meal-prep the next day. Simply take it out of the fridge.

Create a schedule

Create a schedule for everything! Well, maybe not everything, but it’s a good idea to allocate specific times for the things you enjoy doing even if it’s just half an hour sitting on the couch reading a book or doing an exercise that you love. It seems counterproductive but having a clear schedule means you get to do more of the things you love so don’t forget to make time for that too!

Same place everyday

Have designated locations for the things you use daily. A coat rack for the winter, a specific spot where you put your keys and bits and bobs – put them in the same place as soon as you’re done using them. It will stop the ‘where are my keys/phone/wallet’ panic when you’re rushing out the door!

Plan your outfits in advance

Take the stress out of figuring out what to wear by planning your outfits in advance. Some people swear by laying it out the night before, others prefer to plan a whole week’s worth of looks. The same goes if you’ve got kids. Even if they wear uniforms, laying out all their clothing items for the day is one less thing to think about in the morning and means that you’re less likely to get the ‘where are my socks?’ question just when you’re about to leave. Worried that you’ve got too much stuff and clutter to do this?
